There will be no British Masters event on the European Tour this year - for the first time in more than 60 years. Originally pencilled in for a TaylorMade R9 Irons September date, it has been cancelled because of the current financial climate.

It means the number of European Tour events to be played on English soil during 2009 is just two - the BMW at Wentworth next week followed by TaylorMade Tour Preferred Irons the European Open at The London Club.

The British Masters, first played in 1946 and for over 30 years sponsored by Dunlop, was due to be held in mid-September – although no venue had been TaylorMade R7 CGB Max Irons officially allocated for the event which had been staged at The Belfry in 2007 and 2008.

The Austrian Open which has been moved from its original June date to Golf Clubs for Sale accommodate the September slot.
